It is finished!
I made the Cashmerette Auburn blazer with this absolutely beautiful wool blend fabric that Minerva kindly sent to me as a
#MinervaBrandAmbassador and I am ready to fulfil all of my ‘countryside walks whilst wearing tweed’ fantasies!
As I mentioned in my previous sneak peek, I fell in love with this fabric when I saw it. The shade of green was just so lovely, and with the combination of rust colour and darker brown lines running through it I could see a lot of possibilities. Green sits really well up there on my top favourite colours to wear as I feel like it complements my skin tone nicely, and the orange stripes pick up my hair - I feel like this fabric was meant for me!
The wool blend is 60% wool and 40% polyester, giving it a nice handle. It pressed properly as well (though looking back at my photos I do want to revisit especially the back seams, oops - always a thing you notice once you’re home and not beforehand, I promise I did iron it!) which I don’t always find the case with thicker wools. It’s on the thinner side of coating materials but that’s an asset for this pattern where there are multiple application points of different interfacing and hem stabilisers too, and the new-to-me technique of using a non-stretch tape on the roll line for the collar. In fact several techniques were new to me, including a bound buttonhole of which I am rather proud! Helpfully the fabric and fibre information is woven into the selvedge which makes it easy to ensure pieces are all being cut from the same side, and such pretty selvedges also make me think of all the vintage fabrics I covet. I didn’t find the fabric frayed badly but I was cautious not to handle it too much, and the interfacing probably helped with that too. I’m also extremely happy with my pattern matching on the Princess seams, which I did take my time over but am super glad to have spent that energy because I think it looks professional that way.
I gravitate towards Cashmerette patterns because I know they work for me, and this was no different. I do a 20GH blended to a 24 waist hip whenever I make from them, and whilst I could stand to lower the apex a smidge I’m really happy with the fit overall. The sleeves were a great length for me without adjustment and I like the detail of the cuff buttons. These ‘football’ buttons were also a real bargain at the time of my purchase, and I love their texture! I think the binding details on the interior also make it feel really, really special (more clearly seen in my sneak peek) and I chose a gold binding I had already from a previous project to complement all the greens, with my lining being a forest colour as well.
All in all I’m extremely happy, and I can’t wait to find ways to style this differently. We’re going to a pub lunch next weekend and I’ve got a black linen jumpsuit I think it’ll look great with, and I’m also interested to see whether pairing it with vintage style dresses might work (I think it will) and also more professional office-wear (for the very rare occasions I need that!)
Bonus marks to my best boy Bramley for cooperating on our walk - and I think I’ve got enough offcuts left to make him a matching little dog coat when my fleece lining arrives, which might just be the cutest thing I can imagine.
Until next time, friends! Lots of Christmas gift sewing on the horizon now but I’m excited to be back in the groove.
