I don’t often make for my partner because he’s quite particular about his style and quite body-conscious at the same time, but the Ellie & Mac ‘Shawl Collar Sweater’ not only has an aesthetic I knew he’d like but also a great inclusive size range.

I know I bang on about sizing a lot in my corners of the internet but it’s important to me that my body and those similarly sized have access to the same exciting ranges of clothing that smaller figures do, and as a general rule I won’t buy a pattern that doesn’t have a good size range. E&M have always covered that base for me and the men’s clothing is no exception either!

These two sweaters were a surprise make for him (though I have his measurements on file anyway because of the wedding clothing planning so I wasn’t exactly going in directionless) and to see his face when he tried them on was the highlight of my Christmas. He has a narrower shoulder than his waist size so often clothes don’t hang right and have excess fabric about the chest and arms, which makes him uncomfortably aware of what he’s wearing. I’m the same, when something doesn’t fit properly I absolutely don’t feel my best!

The fabric here is a mystery melange from my stash, but I really love the colour and the mottled effect. The other (pictured with the fabulous labels I want to sew into everything from now on) was a charcoal grey ribbed polyester, somewhere in the sweatshirt french terry weight area and bought at the same time from goodness knows where. Now I know he likes them we’re going to shop together for the next fabrics, and I think the one here on Minerva linked below could be just the ticket. I have linked to this post a very similar looking fabric I think would likely make a great alternative!

When things fit right and you can make someone you love feel good about themselves - nothing beats that for me. That’s why this is my #bestof2020 - even though they’re not the most technical or complex things I’ve tackled, they’re the closest to my heart.
