We fell in love with the green leaf print of this fabric as soon as we saw it! As lovers of green, the contrast with the white and black pattern was eye-catching. The challenge with the Kokka Laminated Canvas Fabric was deciding what to make!
The canvas fabric is 45% cotton and 55% linen with a vinyl overlay. This means the fabric is best suited to a jacket or bag of some kind. Over winter and rainy Spring/Autumn days, we have been consistently wearing our ‘RAINS’ jackets we brought to Denmark a couple of years ago. This fabric seemed like the perfect opportunity to finally make our own version, in this fun print fabric!
We then started hunting for the perfect rain jacket pattern. While there aren’t a lot of options for rain jacket patterns, we really wanted something that was a bit different, for example, hood, pockets or storm flats. We landed on the Eden Coat by Tilly and the Buttons as it has so many style options.
The Eden Coat is a fully lined, raglan sleeve rain jacket, with a hood and multiple pocket options. One of the features we loved was the shaped and lined hood. We made the short version, with flat pockets (with pocket flaps), zipper and optional storm flaps.
We used a cotton lawn to line the jacket. We initially contemplate a thicker and warmer lining. However, we didn’t want the jacket to be too warm and humid, particularly with the thick and water-resistant vinyl keeping in so much warmth!
There were many challenges in this project, the first was sewing with such a heavyweight fabric. The sewing machine we used, needed some careful assistance feeding the fabric through the machine feeder, particularly when the “smooth” or vinyl side of the fabric was against the machine. Particularly being fully lined, “bagging” out the jacket with the inflexibility of the vinyl overlay wasn’t without its challenges.
Ironing the fabric wasn’t really an option either. There is a risk of ironing too hot and damaging (or melting) the vinyl overlay. This meant plenty of understitching and hand pressing of seams was needed. But don’t be discouraged, the end result of the jacket is worth all of the patience the fabric requires!
Another challenge of making this jacket was the press studs. While we have done eyelets before, this was our first time tackling press studs. We made sure to measure the placement of the jacket studs with the zipper done up, other than just relying on the pattern pieces, this made sure the flap of the jacket sits well. Once the placement of the eyelets was marked and the eyelets were in place, we used a chopping board to protect the table as we hammered them in.
Overall, we really love this rain jacket, and can’t wait to wear it on many rainy days to come!
