I’ve always wanted to try sewing with lace! I wasn’t sure what to expect but I immediately loved this fabric when I saw it. The description says it’s a floral pattern but you could also think of it as small bursts or even fireworks hehe. Beware that there is a back to this fabric, you’ll notice almost like knots at the centre of the flowers.
I didn’t know what I should be using in terms of needle, then I read that a microtex needle works well but since I didn’t have one I used a standard needle. The weave wasn’t too open and I had no issues. I decreased my stitch length to 1.5 on my janome machine and it worked fine. Note, if you make a mistake and use a seam ripper….. you’ll hate your life haha. I accidentally caught extra fabric when I was sewing the sleeve cuff, luckily it wasn’t a lot but it took me so long to be able to see what was thread and what wasn’t. So pay extra attention to make sure you don’t have to unpick stitches.
Now, I made the #antheablouse from Anna Allen, this is my third one and I love it so much. However, this time I used her low neckline hack (from her blog) and I omitted the buttons. All I did was cut the front on the fold at the placket line furthest from the edge. The neckline is wide enough that you can get your head through no problem. It’s also very roomy, I made a size 0.
I had no issues ironing this lace or folding it to make the sleeve cuffs or hem. I did however use white cotton bias tape for the neckline for ease. I ironed normally and used my serger as I always do, no issues!
All in all, it was a great fabric to use for my first time sewing with lace. I was very nervous about it but im glad it went as planned. I won’t be as nervous for the next one.
