Sometimes you see a fabric and you just know what pattern would be the perfect one to go with. It happened to me when I saw that gorgeous red floral cotton. I knew immediately that a Celeste dress would be cut and sewn in no time. This pattern by Itch to Stitch is so cute. I had tested it so all my pieces were already cut to give life to a new Celeste dress.

The Celeste has exquisite features. It has pockets…one of the most loved features in a dress! I also like the slight gathering on the front skirt panel.
Since my fabric had non-symmetrical stripes, I had to find a way to have something visually balanced. Not a small feat, trust me, but I managed to get one large strip on the front side panel and one large on the back skirt panel so I had a rather visually pleasing skirt!
Same for the front bodice that has a center seam. I wanted to have some pattern matching, but I must confess I’m really bad at pattern matching. However, I think that’s not too bad here.
The fabric being soft and lightweight, I interfaced its lining, per the instructions. The slight shaping at the waist makes it not boxy and I find it extremely flattering. The first time I sewed this dress, I had been afraid of a ‘pregnant woman’/”mummy tummy’ effect, but the gathers being only on the center panel and the waist shaping make the dress rather fitted from the top down to the waist. It also blurs the tummy.
The pockets are cleverly sewn and almost unnoticeable. So useful however.
The 6-panel skirt gives a fuller effect to the dress, but I think that the focus is on the bodice, my favorite part.
As I said above, the front bodice has a center seam. It makes the V-neckline looks sharper and it’s not difficult to sew at all.
My advice is to draw the V on the seam line to know where to pivot. The designer advises to start and stop at the center line.
A bit of hand-sewing is involved if you want to sew the facing of the neckline to the bodice. You may also stitch it with a stitch in the ditch special foot.
I did a size 8 at the bust (B cup) blended to a size 10. I usually shorten the bodice and narrow the shoulders, but I did none of these this time. The fit is perfect like that and that’s a dress that is meant to be worn on an everyday basis. I could even do a shorter one, to be worn as a tunic over a pair of leggings for mid-season. Paired with knee-high boots, a nice woolen jacket…I have a vision of another one soon!
All in all, this pattern, paired with this fabric, makes for the perfect colorful dress. This red hue, with the arabesque stripes and flowers are whimsical. You may have noticed that the stripes are vertical on the sides, but horizontal on the center panel. I found it would be cute to change the orientation.
