Hi, I’m Julie from Sum of their Stories and I’m so happy to be back on the Minerva blog with a festive idea.

We use a lot of paper at Christmas, wrapping gifts and a nice way to reduce this paper consumption is to make reusable fabric gift bags. It’s easy to make lovely bags which can either be used to store something Christmassy, like decorations or just put away and used instead of gift wrap again next year.

I’ve been playing with 4 lovely Christmas Print Fabrics and created a selection of different gift bags to show you some of the options. All of these bag ideas can be sized up or down to make the gift bags you want.

First let’s start with the large square bag.
Komebukuro or Japanese rice bag:

To make a Komebukuro gift bag you will need:

· 4 squares of patterned fabric A - 8” x 8” (20cmx20cm) I used this Santa fabric
· 1 square of patterned fabric B - 8” x 8” (20cmx20cm) I used this Green Snowflake fabric
· 5 squares of lining fabric - 8” x 8” (20cmx20cm) I used some old curtain lining
· 4 pieces of patterned fabric B – 7” x 3” (18cm x 7.5cm)
· a length of cord

Seam allowance doesn’t matter too much in this project as long as you choose one and stick with it. I used the edge of my presser foot which gives me a seam allowance of 8mm.

Right sides together, stitch all 4 pieces of Santa fabric to the green snowflake square, one to each side. Start and stop whatever your chosen seam allowance is from each edge. This slightly fuzzy photo shows what I mean.

If you have a directional print like this Santa one, think about which way up they are. Try to make sure your Santa’s are not standing on their heads!

Join the side seams by stitching the Santa print pieces together. You’ve made a floppy fabric box.

Repeat for the 5 lining pieces but leave a 3” gap in one of the sides for turning.

Press all the seams open.

Prepare the cord channels: Turn and stitch a narrow double hem at each end of the green rectangles.

Press the pieces in half, wrong sides together.
Pin these channels centrally in the centre of each side of the patterned ‘box’ raw edges together.

To be continued…..
