Happy Spring!
I always love a good floral and I was on the lookout for a floral print with vintage vibes. I stumbled upon this one and when it arrived, it was love at first sight. Even my husbanded commented on how pretty it was and that rarely happens. Ok, this may be silly but are you like me when you find a fabric you love you buy more just to have in your stash? I know, only us fabric obsessed people will understand but I don’t want it to sell out and not have some. HA! I have had a few prints from Lady McElroy, but this Multicoloured Tencel Lawn Fabric is my favorite. You’ll need it!!! It’s a must!!! I need more, HA!
Details about the Fabric:
1. Light weight fabric.
2. Comes in 1 background color.
3. 55” width
4. 100% Tencel- I have mad crazy love for tencel! Haha, but seriously I love the drape and silkiness.
5. Multicolor- purples shades, orchra, creamy white background, green and terracotta shades.
6. Would be a good idea to run a stay stitch around armholes and necklines to help stabilize.
7. Great fabric for flowy garments.
8. Easy to sew with. Sewn with a regular sewing foot, needle and thread.
9. The overall style has a very vintage vibe with its creamy background.
10. I would suggest wearing a slip or sewing a lining to your garment as the fabric is sheer.
I paired the Lady McElroy Fabric with the McCall’s M7946 pattern.
Details about the Pattern:
1. Comes in multiple size ranges- 4-12 and 12-20. Bust width of 29”- 42”.
2. Uses about 1 3/4 - 2 1/2 yards for version D, depending on the size sewn. I used about 2 yards for size 10.
3. The pattern is great perfect for a new seamstress with maybe a small number of garments under their belt. It’s McCall’s “Learn to Sew for Fun” pattern. Basic sewing, learning to sew with elastic, gathering fabric and working with bias tape.
4. Pattern comes with seam allowance included.
5. Best fabrics for this pattern are wovens. Tencel, Eyelets, Cotton Blends, Lawn, Crepe, etc…
6. Comes in both paper or pdf printing options.
7. Written in English.
8. Comes with 4 version- midi and maxi length, ¾ sleeves, above the elbow sleeves, sleeveless as well as strapless.
9. Took about half a day to complete for an advanced seamstress. The longest part was just gathering the fabric for the skirt.
10. Once really cool technique I learned from this pattern is to shape the bias tape before sewing onto the garment. For example, this pattern has you sew the bias tape to the sleeve head. Prior to sewing, ease the bias tape along the sleeve curves and press with your iron. Afterwards you will notice it keeps that shape and makes it so much easier to pin in place as well as sew.
Fit:
My bust is 33.5 and that puts me in a size 12 however after sewing McCall’s patterns for a while, I have noticed I fit best when I choose to size down to a 10. In fact, the first time I made M7946 dress I made the size 12 and it was too generous on me so I switched to a size 10 this time. Overall the 10 is great fit but the next time I would make the sleeve elastic smaller by a 1” or more. Unfortunately, it kept slipping off my shoulder during photos, luckily it’s an easy fix!
Modifications:
My only modification was leaving off 2 of the 3 elastic casings. I only used the elastic at the waist. This did make the bodice blouse out a bit but I was ok with that!
Final Thoughts:
I wish I could wear this dress daily but that be a bit fancy for sewing all day. HA! But this is the vintage, romantic, poetic dress of my dream!
Thank you for taking the time for reading my post!
Till next time,
-Alexis
