Hello Makers!

Do you ever buy patterns and think, “I shouldn’t be buying this because it won’t look good on me, BUT it’s SO CUTE!”? That’s what happened here. I saw this pattern and just wanted to try it. Then I saw this fabric and thought, it’s a bold fabric that deserves a bold pattern.

I usually add an inch in a couple of places whenever I sew something, but when I tissue fit this pattern it seemed like it might actually fit without any adjustments. I decided to go for it. I don’t normally do that because of my height. I felt pretty nervous about it the whole time I was cutting out the pattern, I kept envisioning a disaster. You can often remove length in certain places but if you finish a project and don’t have enough there aren’t many options to fix that. I was also a bit nervous about the six pockets in these pants, that’s a lot of topstitching. I also thought all the pockets might feel and look busy, but the fabric is so busy that the pockets actually blend in.

The very first step of the pattern is to install the zipper. This pattern doesn’t call for a zipper guard in the pants. I have some shorts from a vogue pattern that are like that and I’ve zipped my skin in them more times than I care to recall. This experience has made me start learning the process of drafting my own zipper guard and installing it. I don’t feel proficient at this yet but in this case it worked out perfectly. I’m getting pretty good at installing zippers since I’ve made about a million versions of McCall’s pattern M7726. The zipper install was fast and easy. The pockets also went on so smoothly. The busyness of the fabric makes the process easier because it camoflages any imperfections.

I wasn’t sure what I was going to think of the cargo style pockets since it’s such a throwback style. I grew up in the 80s and the throwback styles mostly make me cringe. Nothing makes you realize your age quite like the recycling of fashion. The pockets are perfect though, once again the fabric choice keeps them from being the focal point and they blend in.

I’m delightfully surprised by how much I like these, both the pattern and fabric. The fabric is bolder than I normally choose and the pattern is a throw back style but I’m in love with the result. The pants fit amazing with zero adjustments. They are very comfortable and I think they look stunning.

I’ve already cut out a second pair of these pants. Even though I love the pattern I’ll likely only make these two, they are great statement pieces.

After my last Minerva make I’m so glad that I love this result. Both the pattern and the fabric were A+ and I highly recommend! Happy Making, friends!
