For the snowflake top I went with the Sew Over It, Ultimate Shift top pattern. I’ve made this pattern multiple times in the past with Minerva as dresses and tops. This is another TNT pattern for me.

The SOI Ultimate Shift top pattern has a button and keyhole opening in the back. Sometimes when I’ve sewed this top in the past, I’ve omitted this back seam. At this point, I really like this added feature. It’s a fun detail to showcase a special button. The larger neck opening feature is also really nice to help prevent getting make-up on the inside of the top.
I wanted to note that I have made a full bicep, sleeve adjustment to the pattern. It’s been a really helpful adjustment for me for arm movement and ease. Another change that I previously made was adding an underarm sleeve gusset between the join at the side seam and armpit (another idea I saw mentioned from Threads Magazine).
Initially for this project I included the extra sleeve gussets, for more arm movement. I ended up removing this sleeve gusset on this project. I found that with this top being cotton poplin, the sleeve gussets did not drape well under the arms. The look was more billowy and large than what I was going for. When I made this adjustment on the Rifle Paper Company, Rayon Challis fabric, the drape was really nice in the under arm and the extra arm movement was nice as well. In the end I felt the top had a great amount of movement without needing the underarm gussets.
I love the snowflake print!! I don’t normally sew garments with poplins but I loved having an excuse to do so in this case. I’ve never sewn lace to sleeve cuffs before and I loved the finished result. It’s a tiny little detail but it’s almost like permanent bracelets that you add to the top.
The fabric is not sheer but you can technically see the neckline facing underneath. I have a lot of dark colors in my wardrobe so I’m excited to have this top as a pop to contrast pants and skirts in my wardrobe. I loved the festive element of snowflakes that can be worn at Christmas but can also be worn through the fall and winter.
Versatility is my favorite detail for garments to get more wear out of them. If you haven’t tried this fabric or pattern yet I highly recommend them!! Do you have any favorite shift top or dress patterns that you’ve made as well?
