My husband and I are eagerly awaiting the arrival of our first child, a baby girl. We have been immensely blessed with many hand-me-down and gifted clothing items but I was excited to hand make a few special garments for her as well. When I saw this Art Gallery cotton jersey knit fabric with ladybugs printed on it I knew it had to be hers.

This is the first outfit I made for my daughter, but the third time I’ve used these patterns, having previously made the Brindille & Twig bodysuit and cuff leggings for baby shower gifts. Because I’d already made these patterns before, and I didn’t need to be careful to pattern match, they were very quick to sew up. In the past I ran into a fair amount of difficulty inserting the snaps at the bottom of the bodysuit. The first bodysuit I made was also the first time I’d tried to insert snaps and a few factors I think added to my challenges were the number of layers I wanted the snap prongs to penetrate, the thickness of the fabric I selected, and the inexpensive handheld snap setter I purchased.

What I learned from making those garments was to try to reduce the overall thickness of the layers in the binding and to ensure perfect alignment between the male and female snap pieces. The Brindille & Twig bodysuit assembly instructions include two options for attaching the binding and I chose the first option, sewing and wrapping the binding around the main garment pieces, eliminating one extra layer compared to the second option of sewing all layers together at the same time. I also chose a coordinating modal for the binding, which was thinner than the main body fabric. Finally, I aligned the snap pieces and manually hammered them into place with a dowel tool instead of using the handheld snap setting pliers. I also used ½” SewkeysE knit stay tape inside the binding just below the snaps, on the top and bottom, for stabilization.

I completed the outfit with a Coral & Co. knot bow headband. This pattern is free, comes in multiple sizes, and is such a quick and satisfying make. I’m sure our daughter will have many more of these in her wardrobe.

I pre-washed and dried this fabric before cutting out the pattern pieces and am really happy with the quality. It is stable and durable without any pilling after it’s first run through the dryer. I can’t wait to see her in these sweet makes, which I’m sure will be a staple in her wardrobe and offer almost limitless mix-and-match opportunities. And here’s to hope this first time mom can keep the white background white!
