Hi all!

I’m so excited to finally talk about my favorite make of this year, period! This #hinterlanddress hack has been really good to me, so much so that I have had to talk myself out of making this dress with every fabric I’ve gotten my hands on this year. This is my favorite thing to wear, super comfy but gives great coverage of my bits and pieces. Can wear in the summer with clogs or in the autumn with tights. There is literally nothing this dress can’t do.

Let’s start with the fabric. This linen is arguably one of the best things I’ve laid my hands on in the year of our lord 2020. Once laundered it is superbly soft and is everything I want out of a Linen. It launders amazingly, has a thick hand, and hasn’t shrunk in the wash. I even sometimes don’t hang up the dress right away after pulling it out of the washer (I know, shocking) and it’s thick enough to use gravity to pull some of those linen-y wrinkles out while wearing. I. Love. This. Linen.

As for my perfectly tailored hinterland hack: let me tell you about it. The Hinterland dress is made to put a placket and a waist tie which I have made before but was not totally happy with it. I also think this dress could be hackable with the #wikstonshift just using the top pattern and adding the gathered skirt, but I already am confident with my knowledge of the hinterland so that’s what I chose to use. I use the front and back bodice exactly as they are but the important part is to cut them on the FOLD, not as two separate pieces. Because the placket is built in to the front bodice piece it creates volume horizontally which is the whole point of the dress. I also added two inches of length to the bodice and back bodice pieces to give myself some wiggle room with attaching the skirt and also because I have a long torso. I also did an FBA but smaller than my normal size. I normally add 1 inch in an FBA, but for this one I do ½ inch for a more subtle look.

Confession time: I never actually use a pattern for a gathered skirt. I just use whatever fabric I have left after cutting out a bodice and sleeves and even it out into a big rectangle. Cut in Half. Add pockets. Gather. I’m a woman of simplicity. This dress has a much bigger gathered skirt compared to the regular hinterland, but you do you. The thing I like most about the hinterland is that there’s no fussy facings, it’s just a neck hole with bias binding. When working with linen, facings quickly become a nightmare in the wash.

That’s all folks! I hope you love this dress as much as I do!
