Whilst we still have glimpses of the sun and before Autumn temperatures really kick in, I'd like to share with you my latest make - this short sleeved Lyra dress from Tilly and the Buttons.
First things first though and let's just take a moment to breathe in this stunning lime green floral cotton fabric. Those that know me will not be surprised that I was drawn to this, as floral's are right up my street, but there often aren't many green based fabrics and as pink is opposite to green on the Colour Wheel I feel that these clashing colours were stunning together.
The fabric is nice and wide and washes beautifully. In fact after the pre-wash it has settled into a really nice feeling soft cotton. It does have a tendency to fray a little - which I only really noticed when turning through that narrow tie belt.
As mentioned the dress pattern is the Tilly and the Buttons Lyra dress (both the fabric and the pattern are linked below).
I haven't made this pattern before, but have wanted to ever since it was released. The Lyra is a shirtdress which you can choose to leave loose and floaty or make with a narrow belt tie to cinch it in at the waist. There is the option to keep it knee length or add another gathered tier to make it midi, and the choice of short or long sleeves. I chose to make the short sleeves as this is a dress that I would totally wear underneath a cardigan in the cooler weather, and as you know getting long sleeves into a cardigan is no easy task!
As you can see I also added a ruffle along either side of the button stands. To do this I just cut a rectangle of fabric which was 1.5 times the length of the button stand. Make this strip as wide as you want your ruffle to end up (taking into account your seam allowances). I then neatened the outer long edge of the ruffle and simply added the gathered strip in between the button stand and the front bodice edge when they are stitched together. Simple.
It's not often that I make a garment with a collar, and it's been a very long time since I last did,so I did feel a little nervous about tackling this part of the pattern. I did get a little confused with the collar pieces at one point but it all went ok in the end and I finished up with a nice sharp collar that fitted very nicely to the neck edge of the dress. Phew!
One thing that absolutely deserves a mention is the pockets, in particular the size of them - they are MASSIVE!
The only changes that I made on this pattern before cutting out (apart from adding the ruffles) is that I shortened the bodice (and button stand) by 1" and lengthened the skirt by 3".
FYI I cut a size 3 and my measurements are 34-30-39. I'm 5'2"
Thanks so much to the guys at Minerva for supplying this fabric to me in exchange for this post.
See you soon!
