Super cute summer pjs!
Summer in the city in Australia can be hot – darn hot! But nothing, I find, helps you beat the heat than a pair of cool and crisp cotton pjs – and the cuter they are, the better! I expect a LOT from my pyjamas – they need to be supremely comfortable to sleep in, wash and wear well, not make you feel hot and clammy and sweaty in the middle of a heatwave, and be decent enough to wear down to breakfast in front of people who aren’t in your immediate family. These cute numbers check every single box – they are winning the pyjama game!
To make these jimmie jams, I used two different patterns. Let’s start with the top – I used the Gia slip dress/camisole pattern from Capsule patterns. Fellow sewists may recall that I made the slip dress version a few months back, and loved it so much that I decided it would be the perfect pattern for this adorable sleepwear set as well.
The camisole is cut on the bias, making it incredibly comfortable to wear. Simple bust darts provide a bit of shaping, and I just love the double straps – it makes the top a little bit sporty and a little bit sexy, which I really like as a design feature. I’ve slept in the top a few times since making it, and one of the things I am happiest with is the fact that the spaghetti straps don’t slip down over your shoulders as you turn over in bed – hooray!
The camisole is really easy to sew, and the instructions are fantastic, including some brilliant sewing tips which will benefit both new and more experienced sewists alike. I am seriously a big big fan of this pattern – I can see both more slip dresses and camisoles in my future! It’s also very economical fabric wise too – I used 1m of fabric that was 115cm wide, which is pretty good for a bias cut top.
The shorts were made using Butterick 6882. Once again, economical use of fabric, with only 90cm required to make size 10 in the shorts. The shorts are really simple, and so easy to sew together. There are no pockets or any design additions, which I prefer for pyjama pants – I like them to be as streamlined as possible so I don’t feel uncomfortable in them whilst sleeping.
With both the shorts and the camisole, I overlocked my edges prior to sewing them, so I could then press my seam allowances flat, making the seams look nice and sharp. Both the hems were sewn with narrow hems, and I didn’t trim the seam allowance in the spaghetti straps so they would stay nice and plump (nobody wants a super skinny strap, right? 😊 )
All in all, I’m pretty darn chuffed with how my new summer pjs have turned out. I’m not the only one who was impressed – my teenage daughter has given her seal of approval, and asked for a pair for Christmas! I love the fabric they are made it, which is a Robert Kaufman Cotton Poplin in Green – it’s summery and fun, and feels great to sleep in. If you prefer a lighter fabric, a cotton lawn would work well too (Liberty, any one?)
I also had a lots of Instagram DMs asking which patterns I’d used when I provided a sneak peek last week, with one lady saying she loved them so much she was going to make pairs for her mum and sisters for Christmas – what a brilliant idea! This is such a fun project – if you make some for yourself, I hope you love them as much as I love mine!
