Butterick 6323 - Red One Shouldered Dress
It’s a sad but true fact that I was born in the wrong time. According to all of my natural fashion inclinations, I really should have come of age sometime in the early 1950s. I also (and curse you universe for not getting on to this!) should have been a member of royalty – nothing too senior, but royal enough to get to wear all the beautiful princess dresses all of the time.
But alas, ‘twas not to be. So instead of having a bevy of servants at my beck and call to organise a regal wardrobe for me, I guess I’ll have to make it myself. Thank goodness for sewing skills, eh?
This lovely red number is giving me elegant princess vibes all the way! Made out of a gorgeous cotton sateen, this dress is going to see me through the Christmas party season with both aplomb and a wee bit of shimmer, thanks to the sparkly ribbon detail.
I used Butterick 6323 to create this dress. I am so very pleased how it came out – the fit is perfect! Designed by Gertie for Butterick, the pattern very cleverly uses boning along the front and back dart points to create the structure required for a perfectly fitting bodice. I’d never come across boning on darts before, so I was very taken with how effectively this worked. The bodice is fully lined, and is gathered on one shoulder. The bow/sash detail is optional, but I personally think it really makes the dress – in fact, it gives it a decidedly regal air! And anybody who follows my sewing adventures knows that I am a sucker for a one-shouldered frock – I can never, ever resist them!
The cotton sateen I used was the perfect fabric for the job! Burnished with a slight sheen, it provided the crispness I was looking for, which makes it an idea fabric choice for this structured bodice pattern. Cotton sateen is always a winner in my book – easy to handle, looks luxurious, breaths well and comes in a great variety of colours. Cotton sateen also is brilliant if you want to add volume via pleating, intricate folding or, as in this case, gathering. There’s nothing worse than a floppy gathered skirt, so for me using this sateen was the way to go to create that perfect 1950s nipped-in-waist silhouette. If you want even more volume, add in a 50s style gathered petticoat – just be sure to remember you’ll need to turn sideways to get through any doors!
I finished off this dress with some sparkly ribbon I had in my stash from a long ago craft project, and it adds the perfect festive touch! Even if due to Covid I won’t be able to celebrate Christmas with loved ones, I shall put this dress on anyway, and reflect that at least something in this crazy year turned out well! In fact, I’m so pleased with how this dress went that I’m already eyeing up the cotton sateen in other colours… I can definitely see more than one version of this taking up residence in my wardrobe!
