Closet Core Kalle in Horse and Rider Cotton Lawn

Hello everyone! Is everyone else as impressed as I am with Minerva’s new look and design? I’m so excited to find and follow new maker friends, so please feel free to leave a comment if you’d like to connect!

I wanted to share this Closet Core Kalle crop top that I made using cotton lawn that I kindly received as part of the #MinervaMakers team. Read on for my thoughts on the fabric and pattern below!

Fabric

For this make, I used Minerva’s Horse & Rider Print Cotton Lawn Dress Fabric in Cream (stock ID: PH-SI0127).

First of all, can I rave about how versatile the print is? It’s simple enough for adults to wear without looking like a child, and cute enough to appeal to children. I’ve already had some requests for masks made out of the leftover scraps, and have made a pillowcase for a friend’s newborn too!

I would describe this lawn as being more crisp than the lawns I’m used to, akin to a soft poplin - if that makes any sense to anyone! I found that there was minimal shrinkage in the wash and ironed well, though as you can tell from the photographs it does wrinkle fairly easily with wear.

It would work well for shirts and tops, and even pyjama shorts, but may not be the best choice for garments that require drape or a soft hand. Even though I’ve made a couple of masks from these, I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it as I personally prefer a sturdier fabric for face masks that would hold its shape better (like a quilting cotton).

Pattern

I know everyone and their mom has already made a Closet Core Kalle top or dress by this point, so I am way late to the party! I was convinced by the hundreds of beautiful Kalles and generally great reviews I’d seen that I would have no issues with the pattern so I went ahead without a toile (yes I know, famous last words!).

I opted for View A (cropped with a wide-faced hem) with the band collar and an inverted pleat. The construction went without a hitch using Closet Core’s usual comprehensive instructions and while the fit around the shoulders and bust was spot on, there were a couple of things I wasn’t quite comfortable with.

For one, I felt like the band collar sat uncomfortably high on me - I’m not sure if I have a shorter than average neck… or perhaps the slope of my shoulders had some effect on it. Either way, I might not try the band collar again until I figure out this issue.

Another issue was the length - phew they certainly weren’t kidding when they said it was cropped! While the look of the top is fantastic with high-waisted bottoms, I don’t have many of those and I’m not quite confident enough to go about baring my navel (plus I get cold easily!). Next time I’ll definitely lengthen this view or try out the dress option. If you’re making it for the first time, I highly recommend you try to measure the pattern pieces to make sure it’s long enough for your preference!

****
All in all, I really like this make, but the issues with the collar and length make it less wearable for me. It’s such a pity as I love the fabric print! Thankfully I’ve got just a little more yardage of this Horse and Rider cotton lawn that perhaps I could squeeze a tank top out of. Fingers crossed! #Minervamakes
